MORE ABOUT KATIE

Embarking upon my veterinary career in 2007, my passions laid in animal welfare. I came from a dog training background, having competed at Crufts, the European Flyball Championships and handling dogs at the CanAm Championship in the USA. I grew up with a menagerie of pets and could never imagine doing anything else.

I was lucky enough to receive a place to study Veterinary Science at the University of Liverpool and graduated (with distinction) in 2012. I spent my first year of practice in a very busy first opinion practice, quickly honing operating skills and time management. I then moved to a high-end, practice, offering extended consultations and liaison with visiting specialists; it was there that I passed my synoptic examination and gained my RCVS Certificate in Internal Medicine in 2017 (with distinction).

Opportunities fortuitously arose along my career to not only improve my knowledge, but also give me invaluable experiences. This included working alongside Infiniti Medical with the use of capsule endoscopy (Alicam), presenting at BSAVA and writing for the BSAVA Companion.

At a local level I was also given opportunity to present a regular veterinary slot on Oldham Community Radio and talk at client evenings; I am a confident public speaker and keen to help wherever I can.  Both inside and outside of the consultation room, I am passionate about client communication and education; I feel it leads to excellent compliance and case outcomes. I have been thrilled to recently help colleagues and students to improve their skills and do the same.

My experience of the veterinary world was not always positive. I was a subject to the pressures that veterinary surgeons can put themselves under, imposter syndrome and addiction to work. On reflection I feel lucky to have experienced this side of the coin, as it means that I am now driven to improve mindset and outcomes for others in this position. I have a strong interest in mental health, coaching and mindset. I have attended multiple courses and programmes to that enabled me to help others, including Broadband Consciousness and Bob Proctor's Thinking Into Results. I am keen to expand this area of my life in future, to help as many professionals as possible.

In October 2018, I launched my own company, Katie Ford Ltd. I started my journey working as a Locum Veterinary Surgeon, alongside working on my online content. I have previously given talks to students at the University of Liverpool, about life in practice and mental health; I am always keen to use my experiences to improve the lives of veterinary team members wherever I can.

I now offer online 1:1 coaching and self development courses for the veterinary profession.

CV

I'm an enthusiastic veterinary surgeon, keen to provide gold standard care to patients and clients. I am passionate about mental health in the profession, and truly believe that all of the above go hand-in-hand.

My clinical interests are wide, but namely include anaesthesia, internal medicine and critical care. In March 2017, I passed my RCVS synoptic examination, to allow my CertAVP to become a designated Small Animal Internal Medicine Certificate.

INTERESTS

I am a supportive team member who is proactive, enjoys a challenge and change management. I work well within the team, making full use of my enhanced communication skills, enthusiasm, sharing of knowledge and love of teaching. I am able to work autonomously and will make decisions where appropriate, but always identify when to ask for help and support, as I am fully aware of my own limitations, strengths and weaknesses which encourages me to explore ways to improve and expand my knowledge. I perform well in stressful situations by being calm yet assertive when required. I have a good sense of humour which can lift the mood and morale at times of pressure but always within the scope of professionalism.

In my free time, I enjoy dog walking, CrossFit and have recently completed a Tough Mudder. I have previously enjoyed organising national level dog training events, involving flying across members of the world-record holding flyball team to teach a seminar to over 300 people.

I am a huge fan of helping people via spreading my message on social media. I also avidly follow the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk and Ed Mylett.
